چکیده

Abstract. In cardiac MRI, ECG triggering is used or patients are required to hold their breath, to alleviate motion artifacts and deterioration of image quality. However, ECG signal quality is often suboptimal and patients may not be able to adequately hold their breath. Alternative solutions for tracking breathing and cardiac beating can open the way for robust free-breathing and ECG-less cardiac MRI. Herein, we present a novel approach that isolates the effect of breathing, as well as computes both the breathing and cardiac beating waveforms directly from real-time MRI sequences. It turns a challenge into an opportunity to guide the reconstruction of high temporal resolution images. The proposed method is based on a level-set method to segment the left ventricle from a realtime MR sequence collected with free breathing and without ECG triggering. The algorithm extracts an evolving surface area, which captures the heart’s systolic contraction and diastolic expansion in real-time. The computed time series of the heart’s dynamic area is subjected to wavelet analysis, where the breathing and pulsation components are separated. The method was investigated on 12 real-time cardiac MRI acquisitions. We demonstrate that the left ventricular area, as computed by the level set method, produces breathing and cardiac waveforms similar with those extracted by cardiac MR experts (ground-truth). This proof-of-concept work demonstrates the capabilities of the proposed methodology paving the way for incorporation into real-time or retrospective reconstruction of high resolution cardiac MR.

Nonlinear profile order for 3D hybrid radial acquisition applied to self-gated free-breathing cardiac cine MRI

Background Self-gated free-breathing 3D cardiac cine MRI has been widely introduced, which provides similar image quality and functional measurements as breath-hold technique [1-3]. In self-gated free-breathing cardiac cine MRI, respiratory and cardiac motions are unpredictable during the acquisition especially in retrospective reconstruction. Therefore, nonuniform k-space distribution is a maj...

List-Mode Affine Rebinning for Respiratory Motion Correction in PET Cardiac Imaging

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is an established functional imaging modality but its practical deployment is hampered by motion artefacts. This paper proposes a method for correcting reconstructed PET images through a list-mode rebinning process. Respiratory motion is compensated for by applying 2D affine transforms to the respiratory gated sequence of line-ofresponse events prior to image ...

Spinal cord motion: influence of respiration and cardiac cycle.

PURPOSE To assess physiological spinal cord motion during the cardiac cycle compared with the influence of respiration based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measurements. MATERIALS AND METHODS Anterior-posterior spinal cord motion within the spinal canal was assessed in 16 healthy volunteers (median age, 25 years) by cardiac-triggered and cardiac-gated gradient echo pulse sequence MRI. Im...

Respiratory and cardiac self-gated free-breathing cardiac CINE imaging with multiecho 3D hybrid radial SSFP acquisition.

A respiratory and cardiac self-gated free-breathing three-dimensional cine steady-state free precession imaging method using multiecho hybrid radial sampling is presented. Cartesian mapping of the k-space center along the slice encoding direction provides intensity-weighted position information, from which both respiratory and cardiac motions are derived. With in plan radial sampling acquired a...

Motion compensated reconstruction from free breathing 2D radial cardiac MRI data

Background Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) is affected by both cardiac and respiratory motion. While ECG-gated imaging within a breath hold is often the method of choice to limit motion-related artifacts, free-breathing methods are favorable in patients with limited breath hold capability. Free-breathing approaches require either rapid singleshot scans to reduce respiratory motion arti...
